How to Buy ChatGPT Plus with Google Play on Android

I recently looked into how to buy ChatGPT Plus on Android. The path that worked for me was Google Play.

This is not a complicated guide. It is just my tested setup. Payment rules, risk control, and regional policies may change, so always trust what Google Play, OpenAI, and your bank show on their official pages.

The Short Version

The combination that worked for me was:

Android phone
+ US Google Play profile
+ CMB Visa all-currency international credit card
+ VPN global mode, US node
+ ChatGPT Android app

After signing in to ChatGPT, you can upgrade to Plus inside the app. The payment goes through Google Play.

What You Need

Prepare these first:

  1. A working Google account
  2. An Android phone with Google Play
  3. A VPN, preferably in global mode with a US node
  4. A Visa credit card that can be used with Google Play
  5. The ChatGPT Android app

I used a China Merchants Bank Visa all-currency international credit card. I have not verified other cards, so I cannot say which ones will work. You can try your own card.

Steps

The flow is roughly:

  1. Turn on the VPN, use a US node, and enable global mode
  2. Open Google Play
  3. Go to Google Play preferences and set the country/region to the United States
  4. Add the Visa card as a payment method
  5. Search for and install ChatGPT from Google Play
  6. Open ChatGPT and sign in
  7. Choose the Plus upgrade inside the app
  8. Complete the subscription through Google Play

If the country or region change does not take effect immediately, wait a bit. Google says Play country updates may take up to 48 hours.

How to Apply for a CMB Visa Card

If you already have a China Merchants Bank credit card, you can try applying for the Visa version.

The process is simple:

  1. Open the CMB credit card app, “掌上生活”
  2. Search for Visa
  3. Find the Visa all-currency international credit card and apply on the page

The rule I saw was that this Visa card shares the same credit limit with the regular CMB credit card, and the annual-fee spending count is calculated together. For example, if your existing card requires 6 purchases per year to waive the annual fee, the two cards together only need 6 purchases in total.

That said, credit limits, annual fees, and card benefits can change. Check the live terms in the app before applying.

Notes

First, this is about buying a ChatGPT Plus subscription, not buying an account. The account should still be your own OpenAI / ChatGPT account.

Second, if you subscribe through Google Play, you also need to manage or cancel the subscription through Google Play. Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel the subscription.

Third, do not subscribe on multiple platforms at the same time. If you already subscribed on the web and then subscribe again through Google Play, you may be charged twice.

Fourth, Google Play country and region settings have their own restrictions. Google says a new country or region usually requires a payment method from that country or region, and the profile is not something you can freely switch back and forth all the time.

That is basically it.

If you just want to install ChatGPT on Android, sign in, and buy Plus, this is currently the most direct path I have tested.
